How to synthesize Diethyl carbonate ?

03/03/2014 13:23

Diethyl carbonate, is an ester that is used as a solvent in Li-ion batteries, but its behavior under ionizing radiation was unknown. The transient optical absorption spectra, the decay kinetics, and the influence of various scavengers have been studied by using the picosecond laser-triggered electron accelerator ELYSE.

In neat Diethyl carbonate(CAS NO:105-58-8), the intense near-IR (NIR) absorption spectrum is assigned to the solvated electron. It is overlapped in the visible range by another transient but longer-lived and less intense band that is assigned to the oxidized radical Diethyl carbonate(−H).

The solvated electron molar absorption coefficients and radiolytic yield evolution from 25 ps, the geminate recombination kinetics, and the rate constants of electron transfer reactions to scavengers are determined. The radiolytic mechanism, indicating a certain radioresistance of Diethyl carbonate, is compared with that for other solvents.

Diethyl carbonate is a potential oxygen-containing additive for gasoline and diesel fuel to reduce pollutant emissions. Previous studies using a similar compound, dimethyl carbonate (DMC), as an oxygenate have shown reduction of carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons, and particulate matter.

Our own research efforts indicate that 5 wt. % DEC in diesel fuel can reduce the emission of particulate matter by as much as 50%. Additional factors make Diethyl carbonate an attractive oxygen-containing fuel additive, namely, its high oxygen content (40.6 wt. %), and more favorable gasoline/water distribution coefficient when compared with ethanol or DMC.

When in contact with soil, Diethyl carbonate should slowly decompose into ethanol and carbon dioxide, two compounds with little or no environmental impact. One promising method of producing Diethyl carbonate on an industrial scale is the oxidative carbonylation of ethanol using a heterogeneous catalyst.

Previous studies conducted with a batch reactor indicate an improvement in the yield of Diethyl carbonate(CAS NO:105-58-8)when the CuCl2/PdCl2/activated carbon catalyst is treated with KOH after the support is loaded with the chloride salts. This post-treatment creates an additional phase of copper, atacamite, which creates a more active catalyst.

Batch reactor studies cannot predict the behavior of the chemical reaction due to the static nature of the system. Thus, studies employing a pulse-quench-flow reactor were conducted using the most active catalyst determined from the batch reactor experiments. These experiments have increased our understanding of the chemical reaction and may lead to the development of better catalysts.

Questions and answers about Dichloroethane

28/02/2014 13:23

Dichloroethane commonly known by its old name of ethylene dichloride, is a chlorinated hydrocarbon, mainly used to produce vinyl chloride monomer, the major precursor for PVC production. It is a colorless, oily, organic liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor with Molecular Formula: C2H4Cl2 and Molecular Weight: 98.96 .

Dichloroethane(CAS NO:107-06-2) is also used generally as an intermediate for other organic chemical compounds and as a solvent. It forms azeotropes with many other solvents, including water and other chlorocarbons.

As a good polar aprotic solvent, Dichloroethane could be used as degreaser and paint remover but is now banned from use due to its toxicity and carcinogenity. As a useful 'building block' reagent, it is used as an intermediate in the production of various organic compounds such as ethylenediamine. In the laboratory it is occasionally used as a source of chlorine, with elimination of ethene and chloride.

Now we have get the basic knowledge about Dichloroethane, let’s solve more questions about Dichloroethane.

1.What is the History of Dichloroethane ?

In 1794, physician Jan Rudolph Deiman, merchant Adriaan Paets van Troostwijk, chemist Anthoni Lauwerenburg, and botanist Nicolaas Bondt, under the name of Gezelschap der Hollandsche Scheikundigen, were the first to produce dichloroethane from olefiant gasand chlorine gas. Although the Gezelschap in practice did not do much in-depth scientific research, they and their publications were highly regarded. Part of that acknowledgement is that dichloroethane has been called "Dutch oil" in old chemistry.

2.What are Dichloroethane's health effects?

Some people who drink water containing Dichloroethane well in excess of the maximum contaminant level for many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

This health effects language is not intended to catalog all possible health effects for 1,2-dichloroethane. Rather, it is intended to inform consumers of some of the possible health effects associated with Dichloroethane in drinking water when the rule was finalized.

3.How does Dichloroethane get into my drinking water?

The major source of Dichloroethane in drinking water is discharge from industrial chemical factories.A federal law called the Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act requires facilities in certain industries, which manufacture, process, or use significant amounts of toxic chemicals, to report annually on their releases of these chemicals.

4.How will I know if Dichloroethane(CAS NO:107-06-2) is in my drinking water?

When routine monitoring indicates that Dichloroethane levels are above the MCL, your water supplier must take steps to reduce the amount of Dichloroethane so that it is below that level. Water suppliers must notify their customers as soon as practical, but no later than 30 days after the system learns of the violation. Additional actions, such as providing alternative drinking water supplies, may be required to prevent serious risks to public health.

Irritation (skin)

2-Methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one(CAS NO:2682-20-4) was applied undiluted by a single application of 0.5 ml to theshaved intact skin of 7 New Zealand White rabbits. Contact time was 3 minutes for 5 animals, 1-hr (and 3 min.) for one animal, 4-hrs for one animal. The application sites were semi-occluded.

After removal of the patch, the animals were observed for 14 days for signs of irritation. No mortality of clinical sign of systemic toxicity were observed during the study. On the 4 and 1 hr sites, skin irritation indicative of corrosivity was observed on day 14 and 7,respectively.

Human study

The cumulative irritation potential of 2-Methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one was -investigated in 21 day test with human volunteers. Aqueous dilutions of MI wereapplied to the back under occlusive patches, for a contact period of 23 hours, on 21 consecutivedays. On completion of the dosing phase, the subjects were rested without further dosing for 10 -14 days.

Following the rest period, 24 hour patch(es) of the appropriate test material(s) were applied to a naïve site. Subject induced with 50, 100 and 250 ppm MI were challenged with the same respective concentrations of test material as well as distilled water and sodium lauryl sulphate. Subjects induced with 500 ppm MI were challenged with 100, 250 and 500 ppm MI as well as with distilled water and SLS. Four of the subjects induced with 1000 ppm were not only challenged with 1000 ppm but also with 250 and 500 ppm.

Irritation (mucous membranes)

2-Methyl-4-Isothiazoline-3-one was applied to the conjunctival sac of a group of six New Zealand White rabbits, as a 100 ppm aqueous solution. Eye irritation was evaluated according to Draize criteria at approximately 1, 24, 48, and 72 hours. After the 24 hour observation, each eye (treated and control) was irrigated with 0.9% saline for approximately 60 seconds. No mortality or clinical signs of systemic toxicity were observed. No corneal, conjunctival or iridial effects were observed during the study

Help you to solve the questions about Acetaldehyde

25/02/2014 11:05

Here are some questions and answers about Acetaldehyde I list for you, I hope it is help for you!

What is Acetaldehyde?

Acetaldehyde is a colorless fluid that is soluble in water. It is volatile and can smell fruity. It is also known as C2H40. It is mostly used in creating the silver part of mirrors and in organic synthesis.

How to pipette acetaldehyde?

Acetaldehyde(CAS NO: 75-07-0) has a low boiling point so it vapourises easily. Inside the pipette the vapour builds up a pressure that tends to force the liquid out, as you have said. You could try cooling the acetaldehyde, as this would reduce the vapour pressure inside the pipette.

When you fill the pipette, draw the liquid in until it is well above the graduation mark. This willgive you more time to remove the filler bulb and control the flow rate from the pipette with the pressure from your thumb.

Why is ethanol a electron donor in an ethanol and acetaldehyde redox reaction?

During the conversion of an ethanol molecule to acetaldehyde two hydrogen atoms are extracted from the ethanol. Since a hydrogen atom contains a proton and an electron this process is called and oxidation and these electrons can be "donated" to a variety of other molecules resulting in their reduction.

How to describle the structural formula of acetaldehyde?

Since I can't draw in this format, I'll tell you what you have to do. Draw a C and attach 3 H's to it, along with another C. All of these are single bonded to the first carbon atom and are arranged around it in a tetrahedral 109.5 degree bond angle) configuration. The second carbon atom has a single H bonded to it with a single bond, and an oxygen that is double bonded to it. The arrangement here will be trigonal planar about the second C atom.

Why is acetaldehyde not oxidised to acetic acid?

The usual progress of the reaction involving oxidation of ethanol is to produce ethanoic acid via the intermediate Acetaldehyde(CAS NO: 75-07-0) , ethanal. In order to do this you need to use an excess of the oxidising agent and make sure that the Acetaldehyde formed as the half-way product stays in the mixture. The alcohol is heated under reflux with an excess of the oxidising agent. When the reaction is complete, the carboxylic acid is distilled off.

The full equation for the oxidation of ethanol to ethanoic acid is:
CH3CH2OH + [O] → CH3CHO + H2O - this is the Acetaldehyde
Acetaldehyde is further oxidised to the acid :CH3CHO + [O] → CH3COOH

Summarize safe information about p-Toluenesulfonamide

24/02/2014 13:26

p-Toluenesulfonamide is non-volatile stable solid, and the production volume is ca. 1700 tonnes and 1000 tonnes for 1985 and 1991, respectively, in Japan. Canada and Sweden imported less than 100 kg in 1992. p-Toluenesulfonamide is used mainly as intermediate for pesticides and drugs in closed system, but is used as additive to outdoor paints in Sweden. It is stable in neutral, acidic or alkaline solutions, and is classified as "not readily biodegradable".

The fact that p-Toluenesulfonamide (CAS NO:70-55-3)is slightly toxic to algae, but non-toxic to fish and daphnids, implies the environmental risk presumably to be low. The PEC is lower than the MTC.

p-Toluenesulfonamide showed no genotoxic effects, and LOAEL for repeated dose toxicity was 120mg/kg/day and NOAEL for reproductive toxicity was 300 mg/kg/day. Estimated dose of low concern (EDLC) was calculated as 0.024 mg/kg/day and 0.6 mg/kg/day for repeated dose toxicity and reproductive toxicity, respectively. Daily intake of the chemical was estimated as 4.36-E-5mg/day from calculation using MNSEM 145I exposure model.

Therefore, health risks from general environment presumably to be low because estimated human exposure (EHE) level of this chemical is lower than the EDLC.

In conclusion, although p-Toluenesulfonamide is persistent and toxicological tests showed moderate toxicity, no further testing is needed at present considerering its use pattern and exposure levels.

In Sweden, p-Toluenesulfonamide is used as a preservative of all types of outdoor paints (one or more formulation paints). From present information on uses, consumer exposure seems to be low because this chemical is used mainly as raw material for synthesis of pesticides, drugs and fluorescent colorants in closed system.

Processes are closed system except drying and packaging. Exposure will be considered in drying process (2.5 hour/tonne product) and packaging process (1.25 hour/tonne product). No data on work place monitoring have been reported. Occupational exposure seems to be low.

Based upon the available information, although p-Toluenesulfonamide is persistent and toxicological tests showed moderate toxicity, no further testing is needed at present considering its exposure levels and use pattern.

Continuation of data collection on exposure will be recommended. If p-Toluenesulfonamide(CAS NO:70-55-3) is used largely in consumer products in the future, long-term repeated dose toxicity test may be needed, because histopathological changes of urinary bladder and thymus were observed in combined repeat/repro. toxicity test. Also, monitoring of p-Toluenesulfonamide in the production site may be recommended for the prevention of occupational exposure.

The application and safe risk of 2-Ethoxyethanol

22/02/2014 11:25

2-Ethoxyethanol is a solvent used widely in commercial and industrial applications. It is a clear, colorless, nearly odorless liquid that is miscible with water, ethanol, diethyl ether, acetone, and ethyl acetate. It is also known as 2EE; cellosolve; cellosolve solvent; Dowanol EE; EGEE; ektasolve ee; the Molecular Formula:C4H10O2, Molecular Weight: 90.12, and CAS Registry Number:110-80-5.

The 2-Ethoxyethanol is characterized by their wide range of hydrophilic/hydrophobic balances. It is used as diluents and levelling agents in the manufacture of paints and baking finishes. It is used in the manufacture of nitrocellulose and combination lacquers.

The 2-Ethoxyethanol is also used as an additive in brake fluid. It is formulated for dying textiles and leathers and for insecticides and herbicides. It provides performance in cleaners products with oil-water dispersions. It is used in printing industries as they have a slow evaporation rate. The 2-Ethoxyethanol can be used as a fixative for perfumes, germicides, bactericides, insect repellents and antiseptic, an additive for jet fuel to prevent ice buildup.

The 2-Ethoxyethanol is useful as solubilizers and phase transfer catalysts. It offers the property required as an inert reaction medium chemical reaction due to their low chemical reactivity. 2-Ethoxyethanol is suitable particularly for organometallic and polymerization reactions. 2-Ethoxyethano which contain hydroxyl group is also useful chemical intermediate.

2-Ethoxyethanol’s production and use as a solvent may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams. If released to air, a vapor pressure of 5.31 mm Hg at 25 deg C indicates it will exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere.

Vapor-phase 2-Ethoxyethanol(CAS NO:110-80-5) will be degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals; the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be 1 day. If released to soil, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether will have very high mobility based on an estimated Koc value of 16. Volatilization of 2-Ethoxyethanol is not expected to be an important environmental fate process from moist soil surfaces given a Henry's Law constant of 4.7X10-7 atm-cu m/mole.

Volatilization from dry soil surfaces may occur based on the vapor pressure. According to several screening studies, biodegradation of 2-Ethoxyethanol is expected to occur in soil and water. If released to water, 2-Ethoxyethanol is not expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment based on the estimated Koc value. It will be essentially non-volatile from water surfaces based on its Henry's Law constant. 2-Ethoxyethanol reached 81% of its theoretical BOD in 5 days using an activated sludge inoculum.

Hydrolysis is not expected to be an important environmental fate process since this compound does not possess functional groups that undergo hydrolysis under environmental conditions. Occupational exposure to 2-Ethoxyethanol may occur through inhalation and dermal contact with this compound at workplaces where 2-Ethoxyethanol is produced or used. The general population may be exposed to 2-Ethoxyethanol through the inhalation of ambient air.

Learning more information about 2-Ethoxyethanol, please access to guidechem.Guidechem Chemical Network providing the most complete information of the chemical industry.

Four questions about Sodium iodide (NaI)

20/02/2014 13:30

Q1:How to describe the formation of an ionic bond in sodium iodide?

A1:Sodium Iodide : NaI CAS NO: 7681-82-5
Sodium has 1 electron in its outermost shell. It is easier to lose 1 electron then to gain 7 electrons in order to complete is octet. Iodine has 7 electrons in its outermost shell. It is easier to gain 1 electron then to lose 7 electrons in order to complete is octet. So sodium donates its electron to Iodine and complete's its octet and Iodine accepts the electron to complete its octet. This forms a bond between them which is known as an ionic/electrovalent bond.

Q2: Silver nitrate or Sodium iodine?

Explanation: I have come to you for some advice about Silver Nitrate or Sodium iodine because today I was doing an experiment in class and i was experimenting with Silver nitrate and Sodium iodine and I accidently got one of the chemicals on to my fingers and now my fingers have stained brown and I can't wash it up with regular soap and water so what shall I do?

A2:Silver nitrate gets under your skin. You probably didn't notice it until after you were out in the sunlight, I'm guessing, that's because silver ions react with water in the presence of light to form silver oxide - this reaction was once used in black and white photography.

It looks brown at first because it just darkens your natural skin tone. If you got enough of it on your skin, then as it gets exposed to more light it may even turn close to black. But regardless, it's actually IN your skin now, and you can't get it back out. So choose Sodium iodine.

Q3:What forms a precipitate with Sodium Iodide (NaI)?

A3:If you added AgNO3, silver nitrate, the silver formes a precipitate with any halide, and the NaNO3 would rremain in the water, as all alkalai metals do.

Q4: What may happen, when we mix Sodium iodide(CAS NO;7681-82-5) into water?

A4:Firstly, Sodium iodide will dissolve in water. To determine if it is a physical change, can you recover NaI when the water is evaporated? Is changing water to steam a physical change? Is changing steam to water a physical change?

Learning more information about Sodium iodide, please access to guidechem.Guidechem Chemical Network providing the most complete information of the chemical industry.Guidechem chemical B2B network provides information on china and global chemical market quotation and relative chemical Information.
