 Acetaldehyde is a colorless volatile water-soluble liquid aldehyde C2H4O used chiefly in organic synthesis. The Molecular Weight is 44.05, it is stable, but air sensitive. Substances to be avoided include strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, reducing agents, alkalies, halogens, halogen oxides. Highly flammable. Vapour/air mixtures explosive over a very wide concentration range. May form peroxides in storage. The CAS Registry Number of Acetaldehyde is 75-07-0.

It was first observed by the Swedish pharmacist/chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele; it was then investigated by the French chemists Antoine François, comte de Fourcroy and Louis Nicolas Vauquelin , and the German chemists Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner and Justus von Liebig. In 1835, Liebig named it "aldehyde"; the name was later altered to "acetaldehyde".

Acetaldehyde(CAS NO:75-07-0) is used as intermediate for syntheses of bulk chemicals, e.g. ethyl acetate, acetic acid, acetic anhydride, isooctylalcohol, pentaerythrite, pyridines, etc.

Acetaldehyde is mainly used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals. It is ubiquitous in the environment and may be formed in the body from the breakdown of ethanol. Acute (short-term) exposure to acetaldehyde results in effects including irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.

Symptoms of chronic (long-term) intoxication of acetaldehyde resemble those of alcoholism. Acetaldehyde is considered a probable human carcinogen based on inadequate human cancer studies and animal studies that have shown nasal tumors in rats and laryngeal tumors in hamsters.

The predominant use of acetaldehyde is as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals. Acetaldehyde is used in the production of perfumes, polyester resins, and basic dyes. It is also used as a fruit and fish preservative, as a flavoring agent, and as a denaturant for alcohol, in fuel compositions, for hardening gelatin, and as a solvent in the rubber, tanning, and paper industries.

Acetaldehyde is one of the most important aldehydes, occurring widely in nature and being produced on a large scale in industry. Acetaldehyde occurs naturally in coffee, bread, and ripe fruit, and is produced by plants.

Acetaldehyde is also produced by the partial oxidation of ethanol and may be a contributing factor to hangovers from alcohol consumption, produced in the liver by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. Pathways of exposure include air, water, land, or groundwater, as well as drink and smoke.Consumption of disulfiram inhibits Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, the enzyme responsible for the metabolism of Acetaldehyde, thereby causing it to build up in the body.
