Hexamethyldisilazane is an organosilicon compound with the molecular formula [(CH3)3Si]2NH. It is also named HMDS. The molecule is a derivative of ammonia with trimethylsilyl groups in place of two hydrogen atoms. This colorless liquid is a reagent and a precursor to bases that are popular in organic synthesis and organometallic chemistry. The Molecular Weight is 161.39, EINECS is 213-668-5, and the CAS NO is 999-97-3.

Usage

One of the uses of Hexamethyldisilazane is as a reagent in condensation reactions of heterocyclic compounds such as in the microwave synthesis of a derivative of xanthine.HMDS can be used to convert alcohols into trimethylsilyl ethers. It can be used to silylate laboratory glassware and make it hydrophobic, or automobile glass, just as Rain-X does. In gas chromatography, it can be used to silylate OH groups of organic compounds to increase volatility, this way enabling GC-analysis of chemicals that are otherwise non-volatile.

In photolithography, Hexamethyldisilazane(CAS NO:999-97-3) is often used as an adhesion promoter for photoresist. Best results are obtained by applying this compoud from the gas phase on heated substrates. In electron microscopy, it can be used as an alternative to critical point drying during sample preparation. In pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, it is added to the analyte to create sylilated diagnostic products during pyrolysis, in order to enhance detectability of compounds with polar functional groups.

Storage

Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Keep away from sources of ignition. Store in a cool, dry place. Keep container closed when not in use. Store in a tightly closed container. Flammables-area.

Handling

Wash thoroughly after handling Hexamethyldisilazane. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Use only in a well ventilated area. Use spark-proof tools and explosion proof equipment. Avoid breathing dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Empty containers retain product residue, (liquid and/or vapor), and can be dangerous. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Avoid contact with heat, sparks and flame. Do not ingest or inhale. Use only in a chemical fume hood. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose empty containers to heat, sparks or open flames.

Small spills/leaks

Absorb spill with inert material, (e.g., dry sand or earth), then place into a chemical waste container. Clean up spills immediately, using the appropriate protective equipment. Scoop up with a nonsparking tool, then place into a suitable container for disposal. Remove all sources of ignition.
